Based on a hospital visit performed on 28-29 November 2011 by Prof. Eduardo De Robertis and Dr. Thomas Sieber and authorized by the Hospital Visiting & Training Accreditation Programme Joint Committee of the European Society of Anaesthesiology and the European Board of Anaesthesiology of the UEMS, we are pleased to announce that the Department of Anaesthesiology, University Medical Centre, Utrecht, The Netherlands fulfills the criteria required to meet the European standards of excellence and is declared to be a European Centre for training of Anaesthesiologists.

Lifebox – pulse oximeters and the surgical checklist
Take a moment to imagine that you are an anaesthetist working alone, in a small hospital without pulse oximetry. Your patient is anaesthetised and surgery is underway. The surgeon comments that the blood looks darker than normal, which is your only reliable method of detecting hypoxia in your patient, that could be fatal. You are doing your best, but realise that you would have spotted the problem much earlier if only you had access to a pulse oximeter.
